Windows Vista was introduced a while ago as an upgrade to the Windows XP and 2000 users as something more tactile, easier to use - packed with security features that will ensure the safety of your work and your operating system experience. It was also more flashy, more user friendly and gained a lot of popularity because of its more palpable interface. Though it had some compatibility issues when it was first released, Windows Vista has really come ahead in the game and has become the solution for many computer users all over the world. But of course, Windows Vista is built on the same principles as the previous versions of the OS and because of that, it is inevitably an imperfect superstructure. A word of caution here - no OS is perfect because of the degradation effects of technology and the human element in the mix. There are actually quite a few common Windows Vista error messages and this article will discuss how to troubleshoot them if you ever encounter any of them.

The solution is no different from the solution that was available for previous editions of Microsoft’s incarnations. The common element here is the registry, and Windows Vista still operates with the registry as the integral matrix that it uses to ensure that all operations within its operating system environment run smoothly. With the registry, no matter how advanced the OS, common problems will always occur. When ever you introduce third party software and programs in Windows Vista, you will introduce the potential of new problems, especially in the registry. Bad registry keys left by rogue programs, invalid entries left by incomplete uninstalls and orphan keys are still features of an unhealthy Windows registry - be it XP or Vista. Surprised? Don’t be. Microsoft invented the registry for the simple fact that all executions in the computer need a reference point and all instructions for the different programs need somewhere to be stored. It hasn’t changed at all.

The same problems that made those runtime errors, mediahub errors and Active X errors still exist in Windows Vista, and would most likely still exist in future incarnations of Windows. The good thing about most of the registry cleaners is that they have adapted to the new operating system and is compatible with the new code and language that Vista is using. A quick look on the internet reveals many registry cleaners that have the ability to interface with Windows Vista and solve the problems that its registry might incur. Another good thing is that Vista has some bespoke problems that did not exist in XP, mainly because of the new security code and program structure that is being used by the operating system. Registry cleaners have adjusted to this and responded with more feature packed cleaners. Troubleshooting common Windows Vista error messages is now easy with the new stable of registry cleaners out there. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a new OS means a trouble free registry; you still need dedicated programs to deal with the problems associated with it.

Here are my own basic thoughts on the complex subject.

Most websites I visit have some kind of adsense system running; I would estimate that some of these are making good money from the Google system. Certainly sites with over 1000 visitors per day should receive a small amount of revenue.

Generally I believe the adsense system is a good one, however like most things these days the adsense system has been misused by individuals who fully understand how search engines work; unfortunately these people have already made their money. These people have used many tactics in the past to raise their sites page ranking, thus ensuring more visitors, more visitors means more revenue from the system. These sites are generally kept open for a few months and then closed down, with the next one instantly opened up. This practice has been going on for years. The sites are even sold daily on EBay; I would imagine they are just about to be banned.

What normally happens when a few people misuse a system is it leads to others suffering, and in this case it has happened. Google is sandboxing new sites for longer. Saying this company had to act, they have now introduced the ‘Big Daddy’ update. This update has affected sites that have large numbers of irrelevant links or millions of irrelevant web pages. Unfortunately it has also affected the ranking of genuine businesses; hopefully this is just a temporary blip. My own opinion is the internet should be a level playing field for everyone; however I somehow doubt it ever will be.

I believe there is a place for adsense on most sites as long as it is discrete, well set up and does not look out of place, (fonts, colours etc), The main thing to think about is what do you want from your visitors. Most sites offer a product to potential customers. This causes the dilemma of balancing potential revenue from adsense against losing a potential customer, what I mean by this is, a visitor may be interested in your site, however you could lose them instantly to Google. This is why in my opinion is if your site has a product you are selling, you should never employ adsense on your homepage.

In conclusion I like the system, it is easy to set up and user friendly. I hope Google manage to filter out the unethical element who in the end will only spoil things for everyone.

ECONOMY. Indonesia is a market-based economy but the government plays a significant role in the country’s economy with 160 government-owned enterprises. Indonesia’s GDP per capita ranks fifth after Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia and Thailand. The Asian economic crisis of 1997 adversely affected the country economy and businesses and caused spiralling prices of necessities resulting in social unrest. Future prospects of Indonesia’s economy are bright with economic structural reforms in placed since the Asian economic crisis.

Indonesia’s GDP was US$258.3 billion with a GDP per capita of US$1,193 in 2004. Indonesia’s real GDP grew at an average of 4.6% annually from 2000 to 2004 driven by domestic consumption accounting for nearly three-quarters of Indonesia’s GDP. Inflation rose from 3.8% in 2000 to 11.9% in 2002 but eventually declined to 6.1% by 2004. GDP per capita increased from US$801 in 2000 to US$1,193 in 2004 but unemployment also increased from 6.1% to 9.9% during the period.

The manufacturing sector contributed towards 43.7% of Indonesia’s GDP in 2004 while the service sector contributed 40.9%. Though nearly 45.0% of the country’s workforce is involved in agriculture, this sector contributed only 15.4% of the country’s GDP during the period. Major industries include petroleum and natural gas, textiles, apparel, footwear, mining, cement, chemical fertilisers, plywood, rubber, food and tourism. Major agriculture products include rice, palm oil, rubber, cacao, peanuts, copra and cloves.

DEMOGRAPHY. Indonesia comprises nearly 18,000 islands and has the largest population among the Southeast Asian countries with 217 million people in 2004. Main islands are Java accounting for 55% of the population followed by Sumatra (18%), Kalimatan (5%) and Sulawesi (6%). Other less populated islands include Irian Jaya, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Indonesia is a country of diverse ethnic and sub-ethnic communities with different languages and dialects, cultures and foods. The Javanese accounts for 45% of the population followed by Sundanese (14%) and Madurese (8%) and coastal Malays (8%). Chinese who migrated to Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period account for nearly 5% of the population. Islam is the predominant religion followed by Christianity and minority religions include Buddhism and Hinduism. The national language is Bahasa Indonesia (similar to Malay used in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei). English is not widely used but many businesses and government officials dealing with foreign companies and foreigners are fluent in the language.

More than half of the population live in the rural areas but the proportion of the urban population is increasing from 36.0% in 1995 to 45.0% by 2004. Major cities include Jakarta with a population of 10 million followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Medan and Padang.

Nearly 25% of the population live below the poverty level while another 60% are from the lower income group. The remaining 10% belong to the middle income and 5% in the higher income group. Though Indonesia has a relatively small proportion of middle to high-income consumers, this equates to nearly 33 million consumers. This is more than Singapore’s 4.3 million population with a GDP per capita on par with many advanced economies of the European Union.

INFRASTRUCTURE. Indonesia’s domestic telecommunication system is generally fair while its international services can be categorised as good. Internet broadband services are mainly concentrated in the major cities. Road systems are more developed on Indonesia’s populated island of Java, fairly developed in Sumatra and Sulawesi but poorly developed on the island of Kalimantan. Besides sea ports serving the international shipping lines, Indonesia are also served by smaller sea ports serving coastal shipping. All the cities and major towns are connected by airline services.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE. Indonesia’s major trading partners include Japan, US, Singapore, South Korea and China. Much of the imports from Singapore are Singapore’s re-exports from other countries and exports to Singapore are re-exported to other countries. Main exports from Indonesia include oil and gas, electrical appliances, plywood, textiles and rubber products. Main imports include machineries and equipments, transport equipments, chemicals, fuels and foods.

CONSUMER USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. Mobile phone penetration is just 13% of the populations, which is lower than Singapore (93%), Malaysia (67%) and Thailand (45%). Furthermore, there are only 10 million fixed-line telephones serving the whole country. The penetration of computers is less than 2% of the households and the country has only 1.2 million internet subscribers with an estimated 12 million internet users i.e. a penetration of only 0.5% of the population. Most middle and high-income homes would own televisions but the penetration in lower income homes is lower. Thus the household penetration of television in Java is nearly 60% and in Sumatra 52%. Similar scenario exists for refrigerators.

RETAIL MARKET. Retail sales of food and non-food items totalled an estimated US$32 billion in 2004. Many Indonesians still shop at the traditional markets or “mom and pop” establishments but shopping at modern shopping malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, mini-markets and supermarkets is increasingly popular. There are nearly 5,000 such modern establishments in Indonesia accounting US$4.5 billion in retail sales in 2004. Most of these establishments are concentrated on the island of Java followed by Sumatra. Since 1998, the government opened the retail industry to foreign investments and participation.

FOOD CULTURE. Indonesia’s food culture is diverse because of the various ethnic and sub-ethnic communities that comprise the country’s population. Typical meals eaten are rice-based dishes and occasionally noodles. However, there are many western franchise fast food outlets located mainly in the major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang and Yogyakarta. Mid to high-end bakery outlets serving western and local bakeries are also found in the major cities.

Ubuntu comes in a few different versions available to meet the needs of users and companies in need of specific configurations.

1) Ubuntu Desktop is a basic user Operating System which is a very close match to the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It includes many types of free software, including graphics programs, and an office suite, which is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. Email, Internet browser, games, and other various software is included, and makes Ubuntu just as productive as Windows, without the cost.

2) Ubuntu Server addition, includes everything needed for an individual, or company to run a Server. One of the advantages to using a Linux server is its security. Although, no server can be 100% hack proof, Linux distributions have a better track record than most other Server platforms. Ubuntu Server can automatically install LAMP components at the time of the installation of the Operating System. LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MYSQL, and PHP. These components when installed will ensure that you have all of the functionality of a complete Web Server from the time of installation. Ubuntu Server also allows updating and system administration control over all workstations connected to it. This gives a company a large financial benefit by eliminating the need to update each workstation independently.

3) Xubuntu, and Kubuntu are merely derivatives of the Ubuntu Operating System, but they utilize different desktop interfaces. Xubuntu utilizes the Xfce desktop environment with a heavy emphasis on GNOME applications. Kubuntu is a derivative that utilizes the KDE desktop and application. This particular setup is my favorite and it feels the most like Microsoft Windows to the user.

4) Finally there is Edubuntu another derivative of the Ubuntu Operating System which focuses mostly on education.

The Ubuntu Operating System is just as easy to install as the Microsoft Operating System. There is a host of free software which is completely compatible with Ubuntu, which can do everything that the costly Windows based programs can do. The only real drawback is for gamers. Most games developed by the gaming industry does not include support for Linux, but there is a way in which you can play some of your Windows. There is free software available which can emulate the Windows Operating System in a Linux environment. As more people switch over to Linux distributions, the gaming industry will most likely recognize the trend and start creating Linux versions of their popular titles.

I can not impress upon you enough that the Ubuntu Operating System is 100% free, and so is the software that is included with it. Just the Operating System and the basic software included is a savings of approximately $1000.00 USD alone. In a company setting, multiply that by the number of workstations you have and you will soon come to understand the benefit of switching to Ubuntu.
